'The Masters of Ceremony; The History of Black Radio and the Movement of a People' is a forthcoming documentary film series about the history of African-American radio announcers. The film will focus on the influence of pioneering black radio disc-jockeys on popular culture and the evolution of ‘black-appeal’ or 'urban' radio. It will present more than 75 years of outstanding black radio hosts who were brilliant entertainers and de-facto civic leaders. With their exceptional gift of gab and astute ears for great music, many black radio announcers have found fortune and fame—through their wildly inventive on-air personas and their hands-on selection of music— and leveraged them both to rally African-Americans around important social issues. This film is currently in production. |
